I drove back to Saskatchewan yesterday, got to the farm about 4ish.
It was a beautiful drive, sunny all the way. People say driving through the prairies is all the same, but if you know what you are looking at, and have an appreciating, there is so much beauty and interesting things along the way.
It is a late s
pring, only a few fields have been touched yet.
On our farm, changes happening….
We decided that the farm and land is to be sold. We have had quite a bit of interest.
And for this season, the land is rented out to a farmer from Alberta.
So, you are thinking, what do I have to do on the farm…..??
Well, it will actually be a busier year than usual.
All the machinery needs to be gone over and got ready to be sold, then listed on Kijiji.
We are not planning on an auction sale at this point. Maybe in the future.
And the even bigger task, all the small items have to be sorted out and try to sell.
Tools, parts, supplies, small engines, lumber, iron, tables, hitches, hammers, welders, gas tanks, rakes and shovels, belts and pullies…. so much stuff, essential stuff on a farm, but things that we no longer need.
How we will ever get rid of it all… at this point I am not sure.
But it has to be gone.
Yes change is coming…..it has arrived.
Second year I never seeded a crop since I was 14.
Only other year was when we moved off the farm at Drake in 2001.
I remember I started seeding the year we got a set of 24 foot John Deere Press drills. Before that Dad used to seed with a Morris 14 foot drill. After a couple years with the 24 foot, we added another seven foot section to the center between the two 12 foot sections. That gave me 31 feet…. I was really covering acres.
..
Late 80’s we went to the Air Seeder. I believe the first one was on a 36 foot John Deer cultivator and we used a Flexi-Coil 1000 air tank. Patched together the air system, it actually worked very well.
Then we had a 665 John Deere Air seeder for a number of years. By then we had a 4 wheel drive 2470 to pull it.
The last number of years we have used a Flexi-Coil 5000 Air Drill, with a second tank added – Older Flexi-Coil 1000 tank. This allows us to double shoot, put the seed down separate from the bulk of the fertilizer. We have had a 4890 Case for close to 30 years… it has served us well. Last year, the motor finally went, but we replaced it.
Yes I will miss seeding. It is the one activity that I have done over the years consistently. And a time I really enjoy as I get to spend time in the tractor, watching the land, enjoying my thoughts, and getting the crop off to a good start.
